The Hayloft - complete with tennis court!

Peace and comfort await you in the Hayloft, in this glorious corner of the Eden Valley, in the village of Cumrew.

As soon as you turn your car up the tree-lined drive of Cumrew House, the beckoning fells of the North Pennines ahead, your holiday in Cumbria has begun.

Enter the Hayloft through the double glass door into a bright terracotta-tiled entrance hall, with brass pegs aplenty for all your coats, and a long slatted bench to sit and put your boots on or pull them off at the end of a good long hike. A utility room adjoins, with toilet, and a washing machine and tumble drier. In a cupboard beneath the stairs are rackets and tennis balls for all you Wimbledon enthusiasts.

Upstairs, the lovely long-beamed living space comprises of a superbly kitted-out kitchen, with dishwasher, fridge, microwave and cooker and all the utensils you might require for the week, including a cake tin. A couple of bar stools on the dining side of the work unit mean that guests can take turns to cook or watch. A large extendable table, with dining chairs, forms the centre space of this long room. At the end of this open-plan layout stands the focal point of the woodburner, ready-lit for our guests on arrival and surrounded by comfy sofas and a low coffee table. A flat screen TV with DVD player, and an iPod dock with CD player add those necessary modern touches. Wi fi, super fast fibre broadband, is available throughout the Hayloft.

You pass through a snug with the beamed corridor beyond leading you to two double bedrooms. Both super-king beds can be switched into twins and are of the utmost comfort. Fresh white towels await you in the chequer-floored bathrooms adjoining, one with shower, and one with bath. Both rooms look out onto the garden, with its’ variety of ancient trees. The fells behind and the Solway glistening in the distance inspire you to pore over maps and plan outings for your visit.

The tennis court, fully refurbished in 2021, is yours to enjoy. The walled garden is a lovely place to sit and enjoy some peace and quiet with a glass of wine, listening to the bees, now into their second year of honey production at Cumrew House. It’s a busy place, the walled garden, with the bees and 4 raised beds where we grow a variety of veg. We have a help yourself policy to spare fruit and veg when the season is underway.

The nearest shops are in Brampton, 6 miles away, with a couple of great local butchers and a very well stocked Co-op. Several pubs nearby provide excellent locally-sourced food, giving the cooks in the family a real break - the Blue Bell Inn, Newbiggin, 1 mile away, and the Duke of Cumberland, Castle Carrock, or the Pheasant, Cumwhitton, both 3 miles away. The bustling market town of Penrith, under half an hour away, extends the eating adventures enormously.

Pet-friendly, we welcome one well-behaved dog and ask that you keep he or she out of the bedroom areas and off the furniture.  Indeed our dog, Juno, is very keen to meet other 4-footed friends.  Our cat, Pele, will try to work his way into your affections, but please try to resist the temptation to allow him over the doorstep!
