Cumrew, Brampton, Penrith, and beyond!
The local fells of Cumrew and Castle Carrock are a well-kept secret for walkers and cyclists and you can access all this from your doorstep. The Geltsdale RSPB Reserve and beyond take you up into some of the most unspoilt and undiscovered countryside in Britain. It’s a naturalist’s paradise and if you have your binoculars with you, you may well spot Red Grouse, Black Grouse, Wheatear, Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Roe Deer and Red Squirrel. Indeed, this hidden corner of the country is one of the last frontiers of Red Squirrel habitation, and a dedicated band of local volunteers are keen to keep it that way.
Three excellent 18 hole golf courses lie within 10 miles at Brampton, Carlisle, and Crosby (the Eden course). The links courses at Silloth, Powfoot and Southerness make for great day trips.
Historic Carlisle is 10 miles away. Attractions here include the Castle, run by English Heritage; the Cathedral with the Prior’s Tower and pele tower exhibition; the Tudor Guildhall and the fantastic town museum of Tullie House. All are well worth a visit, and there are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to keep you fed and watered as you explore.
Lying within 30 minutes of Cumrew are the following places of interest; Hadrian’s Wall, with its’ many mile castles and forts, the nearest of which is Birdoswald, 7 miles away; the Lake District, England’s largest National Park - a steamer trip round Ullswater, the nearest and most northern of the lakes, is a must-do in season; the Scottish Borders, with bustling Dumfries or Newcastleton, where the intrepid can try out the nearest of the 7 Stanes mountain bike trails.
A trip on the stunning Carlisle to Settle Railway makes for a wonderful day out and is easily accessed from nearby Armathwaite station.
Children love Walby Farm Park which is 7 miles away, and a brilliant place to let off steam on a wet day. Their animal selection ranges from sheep to wallabies!
Guests have used Cumrew House as a base from which to walk Hadrian’s Wall. 2 cars, or a car and 2 bikes have been all that’s required in order to enjoy daily chunks of the World Heritage walk without having to resort to bus timetables or hitch-hiking!
The River Eden runs close by and there are a wealth of wonderful walks (leaflets provided in the Hayloft) allowing you to explore this hidden gem in one of the UK's least populated areas.
